COUGARS RE-SIGN LUPERCIO

Tuesday Sep 23, 2008
STOCKTON, Calif. – The Stockton Cougars, of the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro), are proud to announce that they have agreed to contract terms with Majell Aterado and Pedro Lupercio for the upcoming 2008-09 season. Per club policy, terms of the deals will not be disclosed.

The Cougars open their fourth season of professional arena soccer at Stockton Arena on October 25 against the Colorado Lightning at 7:15 p.m. Season, individual and group tickets are available by contacting the Cougars office at (209) 373-1550 or online by visiting www.stocktoncougars.net.

“Both Majell and Pedro are key pieces to our fast and physical style of play,” said Cougars Head Coach and Director of Soccer Operations Bernie Lilavois. “They are very athletic and have a great understanding of the indoor game.”

Both Aterado (27) and Lupercio (23) were members of the 2007-08 Cougars team.

"Pedro played well when given limited minutes last season," said Lilavois. "Now he's rehabbed and healthy from his injury and I feel he is ready to step into more of a major role this year."

Lupercio is a Sacramento State University graduate. He was taken by the Cougars as the 11th overall selection in the 2007 Major Indoor Soccer League College Draft. The Dixon, CA native made the move from college midfielder to professional defender with the Cougars last season.

“I had a lot of fun last season,” said Lupercio. “But, I was surprised at how different things were. I thought my rookie season would be more like college, but the speed of the game was a lot different and the guys were bigger and stronger than I was.”

Lupercio scored his first professional goal on January 5, 2008 against the Chicago Storm at Stockton Arena. He was able to score three goals in 18 games last season. He also added one assist for a total of seven points.

“I feel stronger now because of the off-season physical therapy for my knee,” added Lupercio. “I feel I'm in better shape now than I was last year.”

Lupercio’s rookie season ended on March 22, 2008 in a match against Detroit. The young defender tore his left medial meniscus and missed the final two remaining regular season games.

“I like this league,” added Lupercio. “It has a strong future, and the fact that it's local is extremely important to me. I can stay close to my family and play as well.”

Lupercio was an offensive standout while at Sacramento State. He accumulated 10 career assists in 69 matches over his collegiate career. Lupercio scored two goals and added two assists for the Hornets, while earning all-conference accolades in 2005.

Lupercio and Aterado join Brian Farber and Lilavois on the current Cougars roster.

PASL-Pro is a newly formed arena soccer league that is made up of eight U.S. teams and four Canadian teams. The league has partnered with the Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League (CMISL) and Liga Mexicana de Futbol Rapido (LMFR) in order to create a true North American league. PASL-Pro is the direct result of 10 successful seasons of the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL-Premier). PASL-Premier is the nation’s top amateur arena soccer league. PASL-Pro and PASL-Premier are members of Federacion Internacional de Futbol Rapido (FIFRA). More information about the PASL-Pro can be obtained at www.arenaleague.com.
